Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! I’m taking part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon for Parkinson’s UK and would really appreciate your support!

Why am I doing this?  Well, I kindly (or perhaps foolishly) agreed to support my wife Mel, who is also taking part.  My father-in-law, Bob, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s several years ago and now Mel (and by default, me), want to see as much money raised for this cause as possible.

Bob spent his entire career at sea – primarily as a trawlerman, but interspersed with a period as a permanent crew member for the RNLI on the Clovelly lifeboat.  When Mel was a kid, he also spent times during the summer months acting as a support vessel for swimmers attempting to cross the Channel.  You could never accuse Bob of sitting down and doing nothing!

When he retired, he and my mother-in-law, Trish, went to Fuerteventura on a ‘gap year’.  The change in lifestyle really seemed to suit them.  However, when they came back to the UK ten years ago, it was apparent, after a period of not seeing him, that something wasn’t right.  Bob was subsequently diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

It’s cruel to think that someone that worked so hard for so many years, and who had embraced the start of their retirement with such a fundamental change of lifestyle now spends most of his time at home.  Trish now spends most of her time caring for Bob, so the disease has effectively robbed them both of enjoying their retirement.

Although any money I raise probably won't benefit Bob, I would like to try and make sure that other families do not have to see a loved one suffer like this.

Please help by sponsoring my challenge. All money raised will help fund breakthroughs and help support the Parkinson's community.
