London Marathon 2025 - Why I want to make every step worthwhile for Parkinson's UK
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! This will be my third marathon and is definitely going to be my last - seriously, this time, I mean it :) !
I’m running this marathon on behalf of Parkinson's UK. This is an incredible charity that does groundbreaking research into this cruel disease and provides much needed positive support for many people within the Parkinson’s community.
I also have a very personal reason for running for Parkinson's UK. A very dear friend of mine, Niki Oldroyd, has had Parkinson's for most of her life. I met Niki 39 years ago in our first weeks at Lancaster University when we were queueing to use a public telephone (Niki was calling her parents to tell them she'd just crashed her car - a long story!). Even at this time, Niki was affected by the first signs of Parkinson's. Over the years, these progressively worsened to the extent that she even underwent deep brain stimulation surgery to lessen its effects. This in itself was an incredibly brave decision but was only in keeping with the amazingly stoic and humble way that Niki has dealt with the disease throughout. She has been truly inspirational!
Having seen what Niki has put up with, running a marathon is a walk in the park in comparison. I feel very privileged to have this opportunity to raise money for Parkinson's UK and want to do whatever I can to maximise the amount.
