Great North Run 2024

Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! I’m taking part in the Great North Run on 10 September 2024 to raise vital funds for Parkinson's UK.

Last year I embarked on a personal journey to raise money follow my dad’s passing from MND. The person who didn’t get a mention in that was my mam. Around 15 years ago my mam went to the doctors with stiffness in her elbow. Her GP sent her away with tennis elbow. The stiffness didn’t go away though. She went back to the GP who thought she may have Parkinson’s disease and sure enough she received her diagnosis a few months later.

The last 15 years have been difficult for my mam. She’s lost her sense of smell and taste but the restrictions on her mobility have been really difficult for her. Once a really active childminder who never stopped walking, had to retire from work. Shortly after this she had to live through and support my dad through his cancer treatment, recovery and then his decline with MND. Throughout this time my mam has been through many combinations of medications. However her overall stiffness has spread through her body.

My mams day to day life varies greatly depending on how well her medication is working. On good days she can get up and suffers with involuntary movement in one arm. On days where the combinations don’t work as well, my mam can be paralysed with stiffness and unable to get out of her chair. Lying in bed to sleep is a luxury she doesn’t enjoy due to how lying down makes her feel. It is a real testament to her that she carries on through these difficulties, never giving up hope that medication will one day return life to as close to normal as it can be.

Please help by sponsoring me whatever you can. All the money raised will go to Parkinson’s UK nurses, to provide much-needed advice, support and information for people who are living with the condition.

Thank you to my sponsors
