Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK
I am taking part in the Hackney Half Marathon for Parkinsons UK and would really appreciate your support!Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder where brain cells producing dopamine die off, leading to a lack of this crucial chemical, causing symptoms like tremors, slow movement (bradykinesia), and muscle stiffness (rigidity). While primarily a movement disorder, it also involves non-motor issues like depression, sleep problems, and cognitive changes, worsening over time, though treatments help manage symptoms.
Parkinson's UK is a charity focused on finding a cure for Parkinson's and improving life for those affected, doing so by funding research, providing vital support (nurses, helplines, local groups, financial advice), and campaigning for better health & social care, uniting a community to improve care, treatments, and understanding of the condition. They offer emotional, practical, and financial help, run research programs, and build supportive local communities through volunteer-led groups.
