My Reason

Wednesday 18th Feb
My Grandad is my best friend. He truly has had such an impact on me and my life, that I would not be the person I am without his constant support, shared laughter, and just his consistent presence through out my life.

For the last few years, something just wasn't right. He had countless appointments and tests, including an ambulance being called on one particular bad day. We were constantly told it was his blood pressure and/or he was dehydrated, and we were awaiting a neurology appointment (for 2 years). Finally, in August 2025, a doctor told us it may be 'Parkinsonism.'

On 14th September 2025, my mum received a call from his social housing provider as he had pressed the call button and that they had phone 111 for him. I zoomed over to his, with my mum not far behind. All his arms and legs were violently and uncontrollably shaking, which had been the case for a few hours at this point. Which in true Grandad fashion, he didn't want to bother us. As we were awaiting the doctors call, I held off ringing 999 till the call didn't arrive within the hour. An ambulance was with us within 5 minutes of me getting off the phone. I can think of only a few other times, I was as scared as I was in that hour or so.

Whilst in hospital, he was officially diagnosed with Parkinson's on the 18th September, his 78th birthday. His birthday was still celebrated with 3 cakes! (See picture)

Any diagnosis and subsequent treatment was really welcomed. However, with the diagnosis brings new challenges and significant anxieties - a real fear of the unknown.

I am a fixer, and it frustrates me to no end, that I can't fix this for my Grandad. So I am trying to make a difference in my own little way.
