Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK
My wife, Margaret, was diagnosed with Parkinson's and Dementia with Lewy Bodies about 18 months ago. She was always active, and we loved walking together, especially with our Border Terriers (we have had four, but only one at a time) especially in the Purbecks along the cliff tops. We also ventured further afield and together climbed Helvellyn, Coniston Old Man, Great Gable and Scafell Pike in the Lake District. Also Snowden in Wales.
For many years, Margaret also enjoyed line dancing and active keep fit classes. (We now do chair keep fit classes together for Parkinson's patients, which does help with posture and balance.) When we retired we bought a motorhome and enjoyed travelling and exploring different places, both in the UK and France.
It has been so difficult seeing Margaret's strength slowly decline, no longer be able to do what was once so easy for her. Margaret can no longer get down to the beach at Highcliffe. So I will drive to the Cliff Hanger where, with the aid of a stick, she will walk very slowly along the level path on the cliff top. And we will sit and rest together on one of the many seats, admire the view and reminisce about the places where we once enjoyed our long walks.
It has been heart-breaking to see the the person I have loved for fifty six years suffer in this way. And, as soon as I saw details of this Walk for Parkinson's, I knew I had to take part, and raise as much money as possible to help other unfortunate people afflicted with this horrible debilitating disease.
