My Story:
In 2017, my dad, Mark, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 59. I’ve seen first-hand how this disease robs people of simple daily tasks and how it affects the whole family, especially my mum, who has shown enormous strength as he fought this illness. The toll on dad included increasing care needs, falls, and a losing battle with speech and mobility, and he never moaned about Parkinson’s or the struggles he faced. He endured with such grace and quiet courage, continuing to find ways to live and to hope, and his attitude continues to inspire every step I take now.
Within three years, Parkinson’s progressed rapidly, and the Covid period accelerated its trajectory. After a series of falls, he required round-the-clock care and became largely wheelchair-bound. His speech deteriorated, turning conversations into difficult “yes or no” exchanges. He passed away on 26 June 2024 after a short illness. I miss him deeply and carry a great deal of hurt, but I also carry his memory and spirit as inspiration.
Parkinson’s slowly robbed him of his independence and joy, his ability to live a normal life, to run, and to share moments with his grandchildren. He was an exceptional runner, a sub-3-hour marathoner, often entering races and achieving times I can only dream of!
In 2024, encouraged by my wife Lacey, I began running again. I started from 1k, progressed to 5k, then 10k, and eventually completed three half marathons. Now I’m ready to push further and tackle a full marathon.
I want to fundraise for Parkinson’s UK because I aim to honour my dad’s memory by supporting a cause that funds research, improves care, and provides services for people living with Parkinson’s and their families. I hope to raise awareness and funds that can transform quality of life today and drive breakthroughs for tomorrow. I also want to embody the resilience and optimism my dad showed, turning personal loss into something meaningful that can help others facing similar challenges.
Thank you for reading my story. I’ll make sure I update this regularly with all the fundraising I’ll be doing, and any donation would be greatly appreciated.
Good luck Luke and a great cause too! You will smash it.
