Parkinson’s Disease: In memory of my Dad, for my brother Tommy and for our patient’s living with the disease.
I am doing the GNR to raise money for ongoing vital research for new and improved treatments to stop the progression and eventually find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. The money raised for Parkinson’s UK will improve the quality of life for individuals living with the disease by supporting their emotional wellbeing and physical health and essential funding for ongoing research. The charity provides emotional support, helps people to get active and stay active and help individuals to connect with others in their community. I work with patient’s living with PD in an NHS outpatients physiotherapy department who greatly benefit from this support and service.
This is a cause close to my heart and in memory of my late dad who lived with Parkinson’s disease when I was in my early teens. For my brother Tommy who is living with the condition and for his wife Shelagh who has been his carer and biggest support.
Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological disease. In the uk it is estimated 40 people are diagnosed each day equating to 18,000 a year and by 2040 12 million people worldwide wide will be diagnosed with the condition, mainly due to an ageing population.
Research into the disease is understood to be significantly underfunded despite the amount of people living with this diagnosis.
