Tuesday 12th May
A funeral took me to the cemetery on the hillside above the Vale of the Leven. I fancied I could find my way by an old right of way along the hill to the reservoir/ trout fishery on Carman Hill. I got lost. So much for 'All who wander are not lost'. The beauty of the challenge (or one of them) is that any way you wander will be fine. I ambled peacefully along the well kent banks of the Leven. Closing in on the 100 Miles....

Monday 11th May
Acording to Nietzsche, "all truly great thoughts are conceived by walking." Well, I walk in hope, ever distracted by the endless entertainment Nature provides. Today we walked the cyclepath to the Bowling Basin, where the Forth and Clyde canal meets the harbour there on the north shore of the Clyde. Wild garlic, dandelion clocks, wagtails, magpies, a swan on its nest, a man hanging out his washing on a line on a bib barge. Sunlight "annihilating aall that's made / to a green thought in a green shade". 8.4 miles by close of day.

Sunday 10th May
Hardly a tremble on the waters by the quay in Dumbarton. Precise reflections on the river - blue skies and green trees. Then to Glasgow for Lunch with a dear friend on her 80th birthday. Walked through Partick, of where it is said you can find anything you want, including a quakers' graveyard. By the end of another enjoyable day - 7.6 miles

Sunday 10th May
Early start, along the path by the River Leven. Then to church for granddaughter's first communion. Afterwards walked in heavy rain to the celebration party. To the committed walker, weather is of no consequence! Suitably refreshed I ambled homewards. Let the miles look after themselves! (7.3)

08.05.26

Saturday 9th May
Early to the quay by the River Leven. Low tide. A heron perched on a rock midstream. Two miles done before the morning muesli. Later, along the path on the west bank of the Leven. One of the things I like about the 100 Miles challenge is that there is no presribed route. I can set out without knowing where I'm going. "Way leads on to way" (as Robert Frost has it.). I saw a kngfisher here llast month. Today a Painted Lady butterfly. In the afternoon, a stroll along the esplanade at Helensburgh - almost like being at the seaside. 7.8 miles.

Thursday 7th May
Polling Day in Scunnered Scotland. We took our granddaughters to Braehead Retail Park, a circle of hell on the other side of the Clyde. I was consoled by the knowledge that you can rack up miles in a mall as well as the Great Outdoors. A later walk took me up to 7.7 miles, most of them indoors!

Thursday 7th May
Delivered grandson to nursery. Walked by the shore of the Clyde, east of the Rock, to Havoc, a 'bio-deiversity' area on the edge of town. To the west, the hills of Cowal were sunlit. Back through lovely Levengrove Park, and along the cycle path on the west bank of the Leven. Last week I saw a  seal here. Today, two swans and a flotilla of Mallards. After school, was taken to a play park by the granddaughters, Surprising how many miles you can do in a playpark. By bedtime, halfway to target. 50 miles!

Thursday 7th May
Aided by a wooden walking staff, I ambled up the Boturich Road, near Balloch, on the southern shore of Loch Lomond. Fields crowded with lambs and their mothers. Lovely view across the Loch to Glen Finlas. In the woods by Whinney Hill, the call of a cuckoo! Collecting the grand-daughters from school provided an extra mile. There's no doubt that the challenge makes you want to go an extra mile, even when there's no need. Total so far - 41 miles.

Thursday 7th May
Walked by the shore of the Clyde near the village of Cardross. Abundant birdlife. An egret, two herons, several curlews and a host of noisy oystercatchers. Out in the river, a dinghy, broken free of its moorings, bobbing about in the incoming tide. Then over to the National Trust's Geilston gardens. Blossoms and bluebells, sunlight filltering through pale gree leaves. The Darling Buds of May! Totoal miles so far - 31.

Thursday 7th May
Have decided to wear shorts for the duration of the challenge (possible anti-social behaviour?). Goose pimples on arthritic knees. Walked through the old cemetery and along a right of way through fields of lugubrious cows. Had a Covid jag! To my surprise had done 9.8 miles by bedtime. That's another good thing about the challenge - you can accumulate miles in small doses, without long treks that blister the feet.

Thursday 7th May
Started at Hyndland Secondary School, in the west end of Glasgow where both Big Ian and I served as Head Teachers. Strolled through the west end. Good to be able to go at one's own pace! Passed through the university campus, by a young couple looking over the city. On through lovely Kelvingrove, to meet friends in the Three Judges at Partick Cross. Food and drink taste better after a good walk! 7.2 miles

Thursday 7th May
Every morning befor breakfast I stroll through the town to the quay by the River Leven. Dumbarton Rock stands where the Leven meets the Clyde. Where two rivers meet is a magical place. There are wrecks in the river, reminders of shipbuilding days. Later, I wandered along by the Leven, enjoying, Like Rousseau, 'the reveries of a solitary walker'. 7.4 miles
