Walk for Parkinson's: Sunderland 2026

Why we are fundraising for Parkinson's UK

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page for Parkinson's UK.  We are doing two challenges to raise funds for this great charity.

Between May and September, we are both taking part in a swimathon.  Each week, we will be counting up the lengths to swim at least 10,000m each (400 lengths), which is approximately 6 miles.  In September, we will also be taking part in a sponsored walk.

We are swimming and walking for Dad, who is living with Parkinson's and in memory of Grandad and Uncle Chris, who also had the disease.

We are raising money to fund specialist Parkinson's nurses.

Parkinson's nurses support people coming to terms with their Parkinson's diagnosis, help them to manage their medication and side effects, as well as make referrals to other medical professionals such as physiotherapists.

Thank you so much for your support.  Your gift will make a huge difference!

Love Helen and Mike xx

My updates

It's all going swimmingly!

Friday 21st Aug
Well hello there dear sponsor!  Yes you, you wonderfully generous individual you!

We have been adding some more swimmathon lengths to our total of 400 lengths each (10,000 Metres).

Last week, I swam another 20 lengths and today I have managed another 50 lengths in one go!  I still have 108 lengths to go before I reach my target.

Mike is sea-riously smashing his swim target!  He swam another 40 lengths today which leaves him with only 62 lengths to go.

We were also contacted this week by Sam who is the Parkinson's UK Community Fundraiser for the NE.  He said that we were one of the top fundraisers!  And that's all down to you guys so THANK YOU deeply.

Love Helen and Mike xx

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Wednesday 5th Aug
Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity!  Your donations mean so much to us and our family; and to all those living with Parkinson's who access support from Parkinson's nurses around the UK.  Your kindness is helping to keep these services going.

We originally set our target at £200.  We have now reached over £600.  We are blown away.  A heartfelt thank you to all of you.  You are amazing!

We have set a new target and hope to raise £800.  Swimsuits at the ready!  Let's go!

Another 50 lengths!

Well done Mike on swimming 50 lengths in one session today!  He is very proud of himself and rightly so!  Only 102 lengths to go.

Just keep swimming!

Wednesday 29th Jul
Hello everyone

Since my last post, Mike and I have continued to swim each week, racking up our lengths.  Our target is a total of 400 lengths each (10,000m) by 1st September, which will be followed by our sponsored walk on 6th September.

Drum roll please...Our grand total so far is...

Mike has swam another 96 lengths to add to his total.  Mike's total lengths so far is...248!
Only 152 lengths to go.  Well done Mike!

And I swam another 102 lengths to add to my total.  My total lengths so far is.... 222!   Only 178 lengths to go.  Well done Me!

Today, I swam 50 lengths which is the furthest I have ever swam in one session, so I am very proud of myself.  One day I hope to be able to swim 1 whole mile (64 lengths) in one session.

Also today, I spoke to an amazing nurse on the Parkinson's UK helpline to talk through some family concerns.  I was so grateful for the kind, thoughtful and pragmatic approach to providing the help and advice that I needed and it reminded me why we are raising funds for this incredible charity.

Thank you Parkinson's UK.

And thank you, dear friends, for your support.  H and M xx

Hello!
Thank you again for looking at our fundraising page.  You, yes you over there, are a superstar! Thank you for sponsoring us and helping us to raise money for Parkinsons UK.

A quick update to say that we were originally going to swim 5000m each for our swimathon but we have decided to double our target.  Crikey!

Mike and I will continue to count up our lengths every week with an aim to swim 10,000m each, which is approximately 6 miles.

There has been a lot of weekly swimming since I last updated the page.   Mike swam another 52 lengths and I swam another 70 lengths.  Whoop whoop!

Swimathon update

Sunday 17th May
Mike has reached half way with 30 more lengths taking his total to 100 lengths (100 to go)
Another 20 for Helen with a total of 50 lengths so far. (150 to go)

I think we may need to increase our distance because we have until September to do this.  Maybe we can both swim 10,000m each?!

Swimmy McSwimface
