Why I'm fundraising for Parkinson's UK

I’m taking part in Walk for Parkinson’s 100 Mile Challenge to help fund specialist care for people with Parkinson’s.

I'm uniting with thousands of others, all passionate about improving life for people with Parkinson’s.

I lost my mum to Parkinsons ten years ago and so I know the challenges it brings and I'd like to help others in a similar situation.

100 miles walked this month! 🏆🏅🎖🥉

Saturday 30th May

Day 30 of my walking for Parkinsons challenge.  - and it's completed!  🏅🏆

Today I walked the final 3 miles at Roberts Park parkrun,  making the total number of miles walked this month up to 100.

I'm so proud to have achieved my target but also to have spent time remembering my lovely mum, who died with Parkinsons.

I'm also truly indebted to my wonderful friends and family who have so generously sponsored  me.  Thank you so much.  Your kind donations will allow the charity to continue its work to support all those affected by Parkinsons.

Leeds Playhouse

Thursday 28th May
Day 28 of my walking for Parkinsons challenge.

Today it was a city centre stroll through Leeds with my granddaughter. We walked from the train station to the playhouse (and back) and clocked up 1.5 miles.
We saw a fabulous adaptation of Enid Blyton's Malory Towers. The theatre was packed with young girls still enjoying boarding school stories from the 1940s.

I only have a handful of miles to do now before my challenge is complete.

'Active travel' to the theatre

Thursday 28th May
A lovely afternoon as I walked from Leeds Station to Leeds Playhouse and return.

I was with my granddaughter and we went to see an excellent production of "Malory Towers'.

Hot, hot, hot 🔥 🔥🔥 at Lister Park, then cooler evening 🌙🆒️

Tuesday 26th May
Into the final week of my Parkinsons challenge and the end is in sight.  Only a few miles left now, but the weather has changed and we have just had the hottest May Bank Holiday since I don't know when.

So this morning, I just did one steady mile around Lister Park. It was extremely hot and I think it would have been unwise to do more.

Much later in the day (10.30pm) it had cooled down and there was a  little breeze, so I went out to do another mile in the dark!

Canalside to Leeds🔥🌞🥵

Monday 25th May
Day 25 of my walking for Parkinsons challenge.  And what a hot day it was! 🔥

Spurred on by my canalside walk to Rodley on Day 20, I decided to press on along the canal and see if I could make it to Leeds - the end of the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

There was 7 miles walking from Rodley to Leeds, all along the canal tow path. But what a lot of different things to see: busy areas with runners, cyclists and families out walking,  tranquil stretches, colourful boats and then all the hustle and bustle of Leeds itself.

The heat was relentless and we were truly exhausted when we arrived at Leeds Station, where we downed a refreshing pint.

Wembley ⚽️⚽️⚽️

Sunday 24th May
Day 24 of my walking challenge.

Rather an unusual walk today: a mile and a half round Wembley Stadium! ⚽️

We were there to watch Stockport County play Bolton Wanderers. We didn't get the result we wanted but you have to support your team through thick and thin.

Two walks, 160 miles apart! 🚶‍♀️➡️🚶‍♀️

Saturday 23rd May

Two walks today, 160 miles apart!

Saturday morning means Roberts Park Parkrun.  3 miles completed there on a warm morning.

Then later on  we headed south ready for our trip to Wembley tomorrow.  🤞

We stopped off at Milton Keynes and had a 1-mile walk along the side of Furzton Lake in the evening sunshine.

So, 4 miles today.

Scorchio! 🌞🌡🥵🌞

Friday 22nd May

Day 22 of my walking challenge for Parkinsons.

And what a scorcher! 🌞
The temperature soared today so it was very warm for walking.
So I took a leisurely downhill walk from home to Shipley by back lanes and the canal.
Met DH and DS at the pub afterwards for a very welcome drink.

Around Baildon

Thursday 21st May
Day 21 of my walking challenge for Parkinsons.

A shorter,  local walk from home today.
From home, via the village centre, along the Bank, and return via the Coop to pick up some groceries.

2.78 miles today.
78 miles total so far

Canalside to Rodley

Wednesday 20th May
Day 20 of my walking challenge

Today I walked along the canal towpath from Shipley to Rodley. A pleasant walk with lots of pretty countryside to admire en route.

7 miles today
75 miles in all so far - three quarters of the way to my target- I think I'm going to make it! 🤞

Lister Park #3

Tuesday 19th May
Day 19 of my walking challenge

A return to Lister Park which suits my routine on Tuesdays.  Managed to clock up just over 3 miles in soft drizzle; it was hot walking in a cagoule.

Community Garden

Monday 18th May
Day 18 of my walking challenge

A gentle stroll today after yesterday's hike.

I'd been singing with Rock Choir this afternoon but popped out  later to clock up a couple of miles locally, taking in our beautiful community garden.

2 miles today

Burley in Wharfedale moor

Sunday 17th May
Day 17 of my walking challenge.

Today it was a linear walk from Burley in Wharfedale to home. A tough walk with a steep pull up out of Burley Woodhead followed by several miles of exposed moorland.

7 miles done today
63 miles in all

Parkrun 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Saturday 16th May

16th May today,  so that means two weeks of my challenge done and just two more weeks to go.

Today I  once again joined   Roberts Park parkrun  for a 5k circuit around the park. The atmosphere there is really positive and uplifting, even though I feel a little inadequate as a walker compared with all the runners flying by.

People are so generous and I was really heartened to be approached by a spectator who had noticed my Parkinsons t-shirt.   He kindly made a donation towards the charity, which I will happily pass on.

3 miles today
56 miles total so far

Half way there! 😊🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️

Friday 15th May
Day 15 of walking for Parkinsons.

Half way through the month, and half way towards my target.

An interesting walk today from home: round Baildon hill,  along Shipley Glen, down to the canal and  then a pleasant walk along to The Noble Comb for a welcome pint.

5 miles done today.
Total so far: 53.2 m
It's looking achievable.

Local walking

Thursday 14th May

Low on energy today but managed 2 miles, split between Roberts Park and walking to the local shops.

Across the moor to the scout campsite

Wednesday 13th May
It was an effort to get going this afternoon after a workout at the gym this morning.  But we set off over the moor and had a scenic walk to Sconce scout campsite.

Lister Park #2

Tuesday 12th May
A return to Lister Park today.  Bright sunshine but a sneaky cold wind as I completed a couple of laps.

2 walks near home

Monday 11th May
Fitted in around an appointment this afternoon,  so I did two shorter walks today.
A walk round Moorside this morning then, later, a mile around our block.
2.75 miles

Saltaire to Bingley Five Rise Locks

Sunday 10th May
Today we did a lovely circular walk from Saltaire to Bingley,  taking in the River Aire and the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
7.65 miles

1.6 k on the treadmill

Saturday 9th May
This morning I fitted in a spell on the treadmill at the gym before my Aqua class.

I completed 1.6k, which my app tells me is 1 mile.

Moorland meander

Friday 8th May
A ramble on the moors close to home today.  Some beautiful views. Lots of people enjoying the sunshine on the golf course.

7th May - 'active travel'

Friday 8th May
I was busy all day with family commitments so not much time to walk today.
So, I decided to walk to my book group this evening instead of driving.  I think they call that active travel.
1.5 miles to add to my total.

Yorkshire Wolds Way: part 1

Wednesday 6th May
We ventured further from home today to walk the first part of the Yorkshire Wolds Way from Hessle to Welton.

The Humber Bridge formed a magnificent backdrop to the first part of the Walk as we rambled along the foreshore.  A muddy scramble along the final part of the foreshorethen a steady climb  through woodland to the village of Welton.

7.8 miles today

Lister Park

Tuesday 5th May
With an hour to fill this morning,  I decided to take a walk round Lister Park. The sweeping paths there make walking enticing and I enjoyed exploring the various different areas of the park.

3 miles today.

Bluebell walk

Monday 4th May
Today, I was very happy to join Baildon Walkers are Welcome for a guided walk through bluebell country.
We saw some beautiful countryside and flowers and it was nice to walk in company today.

Rainy day 🌧☂️

Sunday 3rd May
Not the best weather for walking today.  😕  The weather forecast said 100% chance of rain all day. So I couldn't really plan a route.

However,  I made the best of it and popped out for two short walks between showers.  That's 2.5 miles today.

2nd May - Parkrun!

Saturday 2nd May
Today I took part in the 5k/3mile Parkrun at Roberts Park.
I was walking so I was at the back of the pack behind all the runners 🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♂️, but I managed to complete the course and get another 3 miles under my belt.

1st May - first day of challenge

Friday 1st May
Began my challenge this morning,  slightly apprehensive about the full commitment and very conscious of the trust placed in me by my sponsors.

However,  I managed a total of 3.94 miles today.  This was split between a walk on Baildon Hill this morning - very warm! - and then a shorter walk nearer home at teatime.  If I can maintain this average I will meet the challenge.

Thanks to my generous sponsors I have decided to update my target so that more can be raised towards Parkinsons nurses.

Feeling positive.

Thank you to my sponsors
