Our why…
Saturday 30th AugIn 2022 my Grampa passed away after living with Parkinson’s. It’s a cruel condition, and watching him struggle is something that’s stayed with me. One of my favourite memories, though, is of him with Ronnie when he was just a hyper little puppy. Grampa, fed up with the chaos, just piped up: “Put him in a kennel!” Even in the hard moments, he always made us laugh.
This October I’m taking part in Parkinson’s Walkies, aiming to walk 90 miles with Ronnie. (Parkinson’s suggested 30, 60 or 90, and of course I had to pick the biggest challenge, even though I signed up at 3am while trying to get Amelia back to sleep!). We’ll be logging every mile, including some special walks up at Rivington, one of Grampa’s favourite places.
Balancing this challenge around mum life and teacher life will definitely be tough, but that’s nothing compared to the challenges faced by people living with Parkinson’s every day. Parkinson’s UK does incredible work supporting families and funding research, so that hopefully fewer people have to go through what my Grampa did.
I already buy my Christmas cards from Parkinson’s every year, but this October I want to do more. Every donation, big or small, will make a difference. If you’re able to support me and Ron on our 90-mile adventure, we’d be so grateful.
