Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK
Thank you for accessing my page! This lovely lady (in an old photo) standing with me is my mum. She was diagnosed with Parkinsons around 2 years ago. As we didn’t know too much about the disorder and my mum is never one to complain, it took a second for us to catch on and go through with getting a diagnosis.
Parkinson's disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years as nerve cells begin functioning less. There is not a cause or a cure, yet physiotherapies and medications are available to slow the progression of the disease. Symptoms can range from physical (such as uncontrollable shaking, stiffness and slow movement) to psychological (mental health issues, problems sleeping and memory issues).
Myself being 18 at the time, I didn’t understand what this would change for me, my mother and my family. After extensive research, I see so much more reason to fund research to help stop Parkinsons in its tracks as soon as possible. Previous research has allowed for the study of symptoms and treatments, meaning we could catch on as early as we did. I want to help prevent other people seeing their loved one’s inner spark fade a little as I did. My mum is the strongest and most positive woman I know, and simply living day by day, she inspires me to have a little more courage and strength. I know she won’t let this disease apprehend her from being as joyful and loving as she always is, but I am sure it increases the effort needed to continue.
Consequently, I am walking a 10K through London on 5th September and fundraising this event for Parkinsons UK. I appreciate any donations or forms of support, or at the least I hope this has raised awareness for Parkinsons.
