Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK
The generic bit - I'm taking part in Pedal Wye Valley for Parkinson’s UK on 20 September 2026! This is further (132km/82miles) and higher (2,000m) than I've ever cycled and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't both apprehensive and very excited.
I had initially started looking for a sportive to do this summer, as a personal challenge, when I came across this route with Parkinson's UK.
My Dad, Stephen, was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2022. Everybody experiences the condition differently, and I've learnt a lot about it through him. Most people know the obvious symptoms, but Parkinson's is broad and part of the challenge can been not knowing how the condition could manifest.
Despite the challenges he's faced, the most remarkable thing is how he has taken it in his stride and responded so positively, with real strength.
A large part of this has been the Parkinson's support group he frequents, which I can tell has been invaluable to him. I have no doubt others have been impacted by his positivity too.
The group is central reason for me wanting to raise something, anything, for similar endeavours.
