Great North Run 2024

Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! I’m taking part in the Great North Run on 8 September 2024 to raise vital funds for Parkinson's UK.

Please help by sponsoring me whatever you can. All the money raised will go to Parkinson’s UK nurses, to provide much-needed advice, support and information for people who are living with the condition.

My updates

Final update

Sunday 13th Oct
This is the final week of my fundraising. Dad now has more days of being in a confused/agitated state. I’m not sure that he knows who I am most of the time 😢. He’s had a visit from his youngest great granddaughter Snowbeer (really Sofia but his hearing isn’t great)which he really enjoyed.
Sometimes it’s hard to comprehend how quickly he has deteriorated this year but he’s still here and as physically well as he can be

Three weeks on

Sunday 29th Sep
I can’t believe that 3 weeks have passed since the run. Dad is slowly getting worse with more bad days than good. A positive is that he’s very well cared for. Another is that his appetite remains very good. It’s hard to believe that this time last year his major worry was that he didn’t think he could afford to buy Christmas presents

Job done!! 🏅

Sunday 8th Sep
What a day!! An early start to drive as close to the finish line as possible before the roads closed. Bus ride, long walk to the start and then it rained 😫. Previously bought ponchos now no use because I’m already wet. The run itself was good, lots of people around supporting despite the weather. There were a few more ‘ups’ than I expected but all was well. The wheels almost came off at mile 11 but a member of the Parkinson’s support grabbed my hand and told me that I could do it. Thank you!! Thanks also must go to the lovely Vicky from run club who kept me going, faster than I normally would too. Anyway, that’s it. I’m still a bit damp but almost home

One week to go

Sunday 1st Sep
Last training run done today. 6 more miles in the bag. I’ve done as much as I can possibly do to prepare myself for the day.
Dad has had an up and down sort of week. We just have to grab hold of the good times

Wish I had his appetite

Tuesday 27th Aug
Dad had a bad day yesterday. He was quite weepy (couldn’t explain why) and sleepy. His only words to me during my visit were ‘did you say you were bringing fish and chips?’ How could I refuse to take him out for some

14 sleeps to go

Sunday 25th Aug
Two weeks to go 😬. Another 12 miles in the bag, an extra 1.1 was doable.
Dad has had a mixed week this week. He really enjoyed his time gardening and it was lovely to see him engaged with something. He’s been a little confused at times, his ‘stories’ can be really funny but as he believes them to be true they’re also very sad

Proud Great grandad

Sunday 25th Aug
A visit from great granddaughter Sofia made his day 🙂

Gardening party

Tuesday 20th Aug
Dad used to love being in the garden. He’s really enjoyed himself today helping out at the nursing home. It was lovely to see him engaged in an activity

3 weeks to go

Sunday 18th Aug
Today’s training run was a 12 mile route around Scunthorpe. It wasn’t easy, hills were involved and it was very warm. At mile 10 I could easily have thrown in the towel, the ‘it’s only a parkrun left to do’ played no part in my mind. Then I started thinking of dad’s daily struggles. I’m not sure if he’s totally aware of what’s going on every day but he does have days when he asks ‘was I dreaming?’ The hallucinations that he experiences and tells us about are exhausting to us, to him when his brain is dealing with it all the time it must be worse. If he can cope, so can I. 3 weeks to go and only 1.1 mile more than I’ve done today. Easy 😬

It’s all getting real now

When dad fancied a steak

Thursday 15th Aug
A trip out a couple of weeks ago

4 weeks to go

Sunday 11th Aug
Another week closer already. 10 mile training run this morning which felt ok (apart from the heat). Only a parkrun left to add on.
Dad has had a pretty settled week this week. We even had a day where he was really chatty which was nice

Todays ‘training run’

Sunday 4th Aug

My dad

Sunday 28th Jul
Early this year my dad was diagnosed with ideopathic Parkinson’s. We knew very little about the condition other than the obvious shaking and the facial mask. We are still learning new things each week, facing different challenges that come with the condition. By raising money, I hope it will help with future research into the condition
