My Story
Saturday 10th AugHello, I am Charlie, and I am running to raise awareness and support the charity Parkinson's Disease. I aim to complete the Great North Run Half Marathon on the 8th of September in just under 2 hours.
Parkinsons is a disease in which the brain does not produce enough of the chemical called dopamine and causes nerve cells to stop working. It is now the fastest growing neurological condition in the world today. With more research, better awareness and funding the charity are hopeful that Parkinsons Disease will be better understood, and a long-term cure be found.
The Parkinsons disease can present itself with around forty different symptoms and can take months and years to fully develop. Memory problems, sleep problems, muscle pain, anxiety, loss of smell, depression, pneumonia, heart and blood pressure problems, balance problems and nerve pain are just a few of the symptoms. The impact of these symptoms can be mild/intense and varied.
There is not a singular test for the disease at this makes the diagnosis exceedingly difficult.
My Uncle Simon was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease in February of 2022. He was presented with a few initial symptoms around 2019 with stiffness and slowness in his muscles. As a Dentist he noticed it was increasingly difficult to complete his work and noticed it took him longer and decided to take an early retirement. It was during Covid 19 lockdown he continued to feel unwell despite his retirement and incorrectly diagnosed with long covid, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and Lyme disease.
Fortunately, after speaking to a specialist Neurologist at Kingston hospital, Parkinson’s Disease was finally diagnosis after almost 2 years. He looks back and recalls losing his sense of smell in his late twenties as his first Parkinson's Disease symptom.
