Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! I’m taking part in the Great North Run on 7 September 2025 to raise vital funds for Parkinson's UK.

Please help by sponsoring me whatever you can. All the money raised will go to Parkinson’s UK nurses, to provide much-needed advice, support and information for people who are living with the condition.

My grandfather and mother both had Parkinson’s and I saw the physical deterioration and discomfort they endured daily, how over time they became dependent on family to help with their mobility and day to day basic needs.

My mother used to take so many different pills I used to joke that if she shook she’d sound like maracas, all joking aside 20-30 pills per day at 3 hourly intervals from 06:00 to 21:00 is what provided some normality to her day.

When she had the tremors they would last anywhere from a few minutes to a full 24 hours, after 24 hours the physical toll was plain to see, she looked like she’d run a marathon………….

My updates

Thank you to all of you!

For the sponsorship, not far to go to reach the target.

It’s really spurred me on to get past the injury, without it to motivate me I might (sensibly) have thrown the towel in, let the madness continue!

Broke 5miles

Saturday 19th Apr
I won’t say that the knee injury is behind me but I know how to work with it.

Finally broke through the 5 mile barrier today.

First attempt at a run

Wednesday 2nd Apr
Tonight will be my first attempt at a run on the treadmill since last Wednesday.

Currently dog sitting and walking them for 2-3 miles per day which has kept me going.

Overall, since Thursdays chiropractor session the knee seems to be settling down, switching back to the old trainers has helped immensely..

It only got worse!

Saturday 29th Mar
Tubular, Fibula, Patella Tendon, Meniscus, getting to know a lot of these terms in depth now!

Training has ground to a halt unfortunately but I know what the issue is and also the solution!

Wednesday as instructed by the Chiropractor I went back to the treadmill. Could tell from the first step it was going to be a struggle, walked for 5 minutes to get in to the rhythm and then ran for 20 but it was torture, or so I thought.

Back to the chiropractor last night and he asked how things were going. After I told him I went into a pain mission that would cost you £50 an hour in Soho from some pvc clad dominatrix!

Turns out that my Fibula bone is connecting with the knee bone when it shouldn’t.

Essentially I was given duff info on the type of trainers I should be wearing after I did a video gait analysis session, that’s what’s done it, if I’d stuck with the original 13 year old marathon trainers I wouldn’t be in this mess! 🤬

So, no running for a week but I’ll continue with other cardio exercises to keep going.

If a chiropractor says he needs to ‘strip your muscles out’ there are two options 1)Run (if you can) 2) have a stick between your teeth like they do in the Western films! I have never experienced anything like that in my life!

🤬🤬damn knee injury🤬🤬

Sunday 23rd Mar
Unfortunately training (running) has been suspended. Jarred my right knee on a run and it’s put me out of action for almost two weeks.

It is improving after some help from my chiropractor, bit of acupuncture has helped immensely.

Not sitting on my arse doing nothing. I am cycling walking to keep my fitness up.

Have invested in a brace and will be trying a run tomorrow (24/03) on the treadmill heeding the chiropractors advice.

Still plugging away

Friday 7th Mar
Really pleased that the weather is improving so I can get out and run some paths, beats a treadmill any day.

Finding it tougher going than 2012 but the muscles are 13 years older now but I’ll get there.

Thank you to my sponsors
