Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK

Some people leave footprints in your heart that never fade; for me, my mother in law Pam Slater, is one of those treasured people.
On 1st May 2022, Pam passed away suddenly in her sleep. We never got the chance to say goodbye and this is something our family, particularly Leigh and Sarah, will carry always. Pam was an incredible mum, mamma, mother in law and friend; one of the strongest, kindest and most selfless people I’ve ever known.
Pam was a passionate runner and before I had the privilege of having her in my life, she ran the London Marathon, something she was so proud of! Knowing what she achieved, inspires me every time I put my runners on to head out of the door.
It isn’t Pam’s running that inspires me though, it’s the way she made the people around her feel. She was my biggest cheerleader. She believed in me and encouraged me to do hard things, even when I didn’t feel like I could. Pam had an amazing gift of making you believe you were capable of more than you ever thought possible.
As I prepare to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon, I carry Pam with me in every single step. Every training run is dedicated to her and there’s never a time when I don’t think about her spurring me on. Almost every time I head out, I see a Robin on my route. Some might call this coincidence but for me it’s Pam, reminding me she’s still there, urging me on when the run gets tough.
I’m running for Parkinson’s UK because this disease affects not only those living with it, but the lives of those who love them. I’m running to honour Pam’s memory and support the families of those it impacts.
This challenge is about so much more than the finish line or a medal, Its about love and gratitude. It’s about carrying forward the legacy of a woman who believed in me before I believed in myself.
