Why I’m running the Manchester Marathon – in short, the answer is my grandad.

Monday 9th Feb
He’s run around 20 marathons in his life, with his fastest time being the London Marathon in 1987, finishing in 2 hours 37 minutes. Ever since I started running properly last year, I’ve got much more into it and began to think about the idea of doing a marathon myself.

My grandad Stan is now 78 years old, although I don’t think he looks it! He still goes running nearly every Saturday at a local parkrun, which I join him on when I can (if I can keep up that is haha). Even now, he’s still running at a strong pace of around 4:40–5:00 per kilometre.

The biggest motivation for me is that he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Despite this, he still gets up every Saturday and goes out for a run. Seeing that makes you think if he can do that, why shouldn’t I be able to take on a marathon?

He’s a huge inspiration to me, and hopefully to others who may be living with the same condition.
