Why I am fundraising for Parkinson's UK

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! I’m taking part in the TCS 2025 London Marathon for Parkinson’s UK and would really appreciate your support!

6 years ago I set myself the challenge of running the London Marathon, and ever since completing it back then, I have had an itch to do it again! So next year I will be back on the streets of the Capital and running the 2025 London Marathon. This time however, I am running for a different charity, but one that has a close personal connection to my family - Parkinson's UK.

In 2018, my Dad, Mike was diagnosed with Parkinson's. He went to the GP initially as he had developed a shake in one of his arms which at the time came on and off. Although it was probably something that was at the back of all our minds, it did come as a bit of a shock when the Consultant confirmed it was Parkinson's. Thankfully, he is still able to maintain an active life, but has to take a number of different medications to help with the symptoms.

However, gradually and slowly, my Dad is having more and more difficulty in doing certain things. Some of them are simple every day things that we all take for granted.

I will also be running in memory of a close friend of my parents, who was also an "honourary Uncle" to me and my sister, whom we called "Uncle Bwm". Sadly, he passed away with Parkinson's in 2019 after only being diagnosed a few years earlier.

Parkinson's is a very complex disease with a multitude of varying symptoms. It also seems to affect both the young and old, and the progression varies from person to person. It is therefore crucial to continue the research into the disease and to hopefully one day find a cure.

I do have quite a target to raise, so any donation you might be able to give - however big or small - will be gratefully received and appreciated. I appreciate that times are hard for us all at the moment, but I know that charities such as Parkinson's rely heavily on the money raised in order to continue their invaluable work.

Diolch yn fawr. Thank you very much.

Please help by sponsoring me with whatever you can. The money raised will help fund groundbreaking research and change the lives of the Parkinson's community.

My updates

10 Mile Race smashed

Sunday 2nd Mar
Today marks the end of Week 10 of training, and this morning I ran in the Chippenham Spring 10 mile race.

I hadn't been looking forward to this at all, as I am not going to lie, I have been feeling a bit disheartened and feeling that I was never going to get round the course in the 2.5 hour cut off time. However - I absolutely smashed it and ran it just under 2 hours (1hr 56min to be precise!!)

I started the race pretty much right at the back of the field, with the 2 hour pacer - there weren't any that were slower than that lol! I stuck with her for the first couple of miles, but then gained some confidence and started to pull away, and by the time I was at mile 9 I had nearly caught up with the 1hour 55min pacer!

Needless to say I am very chuffed with myself, and now also have a very pretty medal to show for my effort.

The mileage is definitely ramping up now, as next week I am due to run 13 miles - a half marathon.

8 weeks to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

London Baby!!

Sunday 19th Jan
I have come to the end of my fourth week of training already! However, yesterday I went up to London to the Parkinson's HQ to meet up with some of the others who are taking on the marathon for Parkinson's, and to get some advice on training and fund raising.

It really was a great day, and I got to meet some lovely fellow runners - everyone was so friendly and supportive of each other. Everyone who is running had some personal connection with Parkinson's. Like me, most were running for a relative or a friend with Parkinson's, or were running in memory of someone who had Parkinson's. However, there were also a few in the team who are running after being diagnosed with Parkinson's themselves.

One of the things that I learned yesterday, and what I had not realised before, is that Parkinson's UK actually give money to the NHS to fund Parkinson's Nurses. The work that these nurses do and the support they provide is invaluable to those who are living with Parkinson's and to their families, and so it is even more important that the charity raises as much money as possible to continue this type of funding.

The day was rounded off with a training run around St James's Park. It was a bit of a challenge negotiating through all the tourists, pigeons and pelicans, but it was really good to have the opportunity to run with all my fellow team mates.

It has made me more determined to get over that finish line on the 27th April!!

And so it begins

Friday 10th Jan
Well we may be at the end of the second week in January, but I am already 3 weeks into my marathon training!

My first training run was on Boxing Day - luckily it was only a gentle 2 miles or so on a treadmill, but it was a good way to shake off some of that Christmas Day lethargy.

So far all my training runs have been on a treadmill. Today I ran a 5K, and whilst I was running, Neil found a YouTube video of the London Marathon which he played on the TV, so I had some inspiration to look at whilst "trudging on the dreadmill" :-()

I have my first "long run" coming up on the weekend, so I am hoping to finally get outside and run the 8.9Km (or 5.5 miles if you're old school).

So far I have raised just over 300, but have a long way to go again to reach my target. I appreciate that January isn't the best time to ask anyone for donations, but if you do have some money to spare it will be really appreciated and help keep me going!

Thanks xx
